How much pressure in the boat did it take to produce ear damage? Could this be a cause of the many hearing problems among us and our associates? Do you remember the holes drilled in the hearing protection for the Diesel Operator that weren't sealed so you could use the sound powered phones? How about the debicile level in the High Pac bay and no hearing protection. Were our ears regularly checked and flushed of wax buildup if necessary? These are all routine things these days because of the danger of hearing impairment and OSHA.
Walt,

VA very receptive to hearing loss, especially those serving  on the diesel boats.

Check them out for hearing aids.  If you are being stone walled
most counties have Veterans Affairs Departments who can help
cut through the red tape.  Especially effective in New Jersey!!!!

I asked my VA Dr. about hearing aids, he said no.  Sometime later walking by the Audiology lab at the VA Hospital.  Asked the guy at the desk about hearing aids...he said he'd put my name on the list.  About a month late got them.  Probably would have cost $4500-5000 outside.  Point is, keep asking.

Snorkle transit from San Diego to Yokosuka in December the head valve cycled continuously.  "Snorkle Bread" got a very bad rep.  Zero to 6000 ft and back in about 30 seconds and every wake-up sounded fuzzy until you held your nose and equalized.  How could you avoid ear damage?

On boats since the Tullibee for me, the diesel
high vacuum shutdown was 5" of mercury vacuum.
That's painful. During sea trials on the Miami, they
had to prove the evaporator could produce good
water while in a vacuum, so they cycled the head
valve open and shut on the diesel and maintained
about 2" of mercury vacuum. That was focking painful.
I got SHAT from the VA for my hearing loss.

I mentioned this before, but will repeat it now for any of you trying to get help from the VA.

DON'T TRY DOING IT BY YOURSELF.  Make sure you go talk with a Veterans Service Officer.  They know what to say, who to say it to, and will submit all the paperwork needed for you.  All you have to do is to sit back and wait.   VSOs get paid to help veterans file claims.  Don't ask the VA doctors to assist you with any claims.  That is not in their job description.  I work with several good VSOs in my area and they are very competent.

Dan has it!  Also the DAV can really help and you don't have to be a DAV member to use their assistance.
I have had hearing aids for 5 years and just last week got new ones and a device which works with them and allows me to hear TV when its volume control is all the way off!  Bluetooth is the way it happens. Also it will work it my iPad but I haven't done that yet.
I get 10% for tinitus and also am classified as hearing disabled.  I get 10% for tinitus but not for hearing loss as it isn't quite bad enough.  I have to convince them that one year on a DBF and 5 years around high speed turbines, etc. caused me to lose some of my hearing.  I tried once and it was turned down.  I am not giving up.  Going back in March/April to try again.  This time with DAV assistance.

Good luck Ron.
I got turned down flat when I attempted to apply for hearing aids a few years ago...
