Sad to hear. I had the pleasure of meeting Ric in Seattle 20+ years ago on the way to an Alaska cruise. He gave my wife & I a tour of the Russkie boat on display there at the time. 
His site Pigboat.com is a treasure to the US submarine community.

From USSVI Seattle Base, Steve Shelton:


Our Seattle Base Founding Member, Ric Hedman went on eternal patrol Saturday, January 31st, 2025.

His passing is a great loss to our base, and to the USSVI. Ric married his sweetheart Patty on Friday January 23rd as one of his final requests.

Our Seattle base began with Ric and Cliff Nutter, over coffee in 1999. Together they found several other interested people and chartered our Seattle Base into the national organization shortly thereafter.

Ric is also a founder of the website Pigboats.com. He told us last week that the website is in good hands with his partner David Johnson and encouraged us to visit and use this site for our historic enjoyment.

Patty has not decided on when services will be held or where. We will announce that information on this newsfeed.

Sailor, rest your oars.

I wonder if it's the "wow, this will be neat", then reality hits like it does lot of people, or if nuke trained, they see how much they can make on the outside vs punching holes..

I know when I was in Hunt For Red October came out, and it was Top Gun for submarines..  people were signing up left and right..  and few months after sub school/A-C schools, reality hit and people were doing whatever they could to get out.  Few took the whiz quiz way out,  another went to the Captain and did the Tell part of DADT, even though he wasn't.. (damn good sonarman too)

I have enjoyed "popping in" every so often, posting a few times, and reading what's going on as I was writing and completing my book "Break in the Chain Intelligence Ignored."
I was not a submariner nor ever in the Navy (which was a disappointment to my Navy captain grandfather).
This has been a great site and I thank everyone for answering my questions and advice.
I sincerely wish everyone well.
